Iowa Peace Officers

      Association

Chief Harnish(left) visiting with a Legislator at the Capitol.

I started as a law enforcement officer in 1979, and worked over the years either full time or part time for the cities of Mount Vernon, Lisbon, Coggon, Mechanicsville, Columbus Junction, and Robins.  I was appointed as Chief of Police for the City of Toledo, IA in September 2003.  I am also a part time reserve deputy sheriff for the Benton County Sheriff's Office.  In 2003 I was elected to the board of directors of IACOP&PO as  fourth vice president, and served as President of the Association in 2008 & 2009.

My wife, Sue (a nurse practitioner in Cedar Rapids), and I live in Toledo, and between us we have six children and two granddaughters.  My goals as President were to increase the involvement of our members in our Association and to offer quality training opportunities for all law enforcement officers across the state of Iowa.  As an Association, we will continue to monitor legislative issues and promote legislation that has a positive impact on peace officers and the citizens that we serve.  I would invite anyone from the law enforcement community or the public to contact myself or our board members with comments or suggestions that would help us in best serving the needs of Iowa's law enforcement officers.
