Mike McKelvey has worked for the Mason City Police Department since 1994. During this time, he has been a patrol officer, F.T.O., crime scene investigator, and dual-purpose K-9 handler. He has also held ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant and is currently the Operations Captain. As the Ops Captain, his duties include the supervision of the three patrol shifts and their supervisors.

Mike McKelvey is married and has two children. They reside in Mason City. When not at work, he and his family enjoy being outside. During the colder months, you will usually find him watching pro-football and following roster changes.

Tough decisions lie ahead for most agencies struggling with the economy. The upward nationwide trend in on-duty deaths is also troubling. Our association's efforts to keep the membership informed of legislative changes as well as having input in future decisions will become more important. As things get tougher, we must not forget those we serve and continue to strive for excellence in our daily lives, on and off-duty.

Captain McKelvey was elected to serve as President of the IPOA at the 2019 Conference in February. His first official item of business was to appoint Chief Duffus as Vice President of the IPOA. At the 2023 IPOA Conference Capt. McKelvey nominated Chief Duffus to assume the role of President of the IPOA. Capt. McKelvey now serves the IPOA as Past President of the IPOA.

Sincerely,

Mike McKelvey
