The City of Newton, Iowa is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer.  Newton is a progressive community with a population of approximately 15,000 located East of the Des Moines metro on Interstate 80.  It is the home of the Iowa Speedway and known for its involvement in the wind energy industry.  The Newton Police Department consists of 23 sworn and 5 non-sworn employees. New officers earn an excellent starting salary of $47,117.64 with additional shift differential pay if assigned to one of the night shifts.  The City of Newton offers a very generous benefit package that includes health insurance with dental and vision options, paid sick leave, paid vacation and an additional 11 paid days of leave annually.  Officers also receive a semi-annual clothing allowance and can earn an additional 2 paid days leave for successfully completing semi-annual in-service fitness testing.  

 

Newton Officers enjoy a unique work schedule that gives them 4 days off between work weeks and ensures every officer gets one weekend off per month. In addition to an outstanding work schedule the department provides officers excellent equipment to include Ford SUVs outfitted with modern computers, cameras, and rifles.

 

Applicants must meet the minimum hiring requirements set forth by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and section 400.17 of the Code of Iowa.  An associate degree in criminal justice or a related field and ILEA certification is preferred but not required.  Veterans are encouraged to apply. Job Description


Motor Vehicle Enforcement (MVE) is an Office in the Motor Vehicle Division and under

the Iowa Department of Transportation.  Currently, MVE has 107 fulltime positions as

state certified peace officers, residing across the state.  Our core mission involves the

specialized enforcement of state law and federal regulation as it pertains to commercial

motor vehicles.  Our daily duties do involve the enforcement of all state traffic and

criminal law, and all other duties commonly associated with police work.

Lifting: Some heavy lifting will be required (50-75 pounds)

Travel: Overnight travel not regularly required.

Shifts: Rotating shifts day, evening, night.

Rotate according to shift Monday through Sunday.

Salary range (subject to change): $40,809-$61048

Required Minimum Qualifications


Candidates for these positions, in accordance with Iowa Administrative Code 501, Chapter 2 must:

a) Be a United States citizen and a resident of Iowa (or intend to become a resident upon hire).

b) Be eighteen years of age at the time of hire. c) Possess a valid driver’s license issued by

the State of Iowa (or be eligible to obtain one upon hire).

d) Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency certificate.
